Remembering the first public swimming pool in Northern Virginia constructed in Alexandria for African-Americans. From The Alexandria Times, May 25, 2023.
How could my great uncle Oscar Taylor was not mentioned. He taught most of the blacks how to swim. He would swim across the Potomac River to Maryland and back. He taught me how to swim by picking me up and throwing me into the pool.
Thank you for your comment and for reading About Alexandria.
One of the many fascinating things about the Johnson Pool was the large number of volunteers, such as your great uncle, Oscar Taylor, who contributed to making the pool a vibrant, welcoming and important place. I am glad that you took the time to comment so that Mr. Taylor could be specifically recognized.
I enjoyed this fun and informative piece of the city’s history. The personal reminiscences and old photographs really brought the article to life. Just a wonderful piece!
